About Our Flags

US flags ordered to half staff in Honor of Sergeant Paul M. Gordon
Kentucky Governor Beshear ordered that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on Friday, June 20, 2014 in honor of Kentucky soldier Sergeant Paul M. Gordon who died while prisoner of war during the Korea War and whose remains were recently identified. In 1951, Gordon was deployed in the vicinity of Wonju, South Korea. On January 7, 1951, following a battle against enemy forces, Gordon was listed as missing in action. In September of 1953, as part of a prisoner exchange, known as Operation Big Switch, returning U.S. service members reported that Gordon had been captured by the Chinese during the battle and taken to a POW camp, where he died in June 1951.

US flags to half staff in honor of Army Corporal Richard Isbell
Kentucky Governor Besheardirected that flags at all state buildings be lowered to half-staff on Saturday, June 7, 2014 in honor of United States Army Corporal Richard Isbell, a Kentucky soldier who died during the Korean Conflict whose remains were recently identified. All individuals are encouraged to join in this tribute.

Flags to Half-Staff in Honor William T. Carneal of

Kentucky Governor Beshear has directed flags to half-staff on Friday, April 25, 2014, at all state buildings in honor of a Kentucky soldier who died during World War II and whose remains were recently identified. Army Pfc. William T. Carneal of Paducah, KY went missing on July 7, 1944, and on March 21, 2013, a Japanese nongovernmental organization worker uncovered human remains, personal effects, and military equipment while searching for Japanese soldiers on the northern coastline of Saipan Island. All individuals are encouraged to join in this tribute.
